A forest dream in the old Chinese system is usually a "straight dream" (正梦) — the kind that comes from a calm mind and just reflects how you are. That doesn't mean it says nothing.
Wood and the rising energy. Wood is the element of spring and the liver. A lush forest in a dream, from a medical point of view, often means the liver energy is flowing freely. The Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon says "in the three months of spring, all things come to life" — that vitality is what a good forest dream pictures. Sometimes it's just your body telling you you're in decent shape.
Losing your way. "Dreaming of being lost in a forest — beware of losing your direction." The old Chinese fear of the fork in the road runs deep. Yang Zhu, the philosopher, wept at a crossroads — not because the road was hard, but because there were too many choices. A lost-in-the-forest dream in modern terms is that decision you keep going back to: the job change, the move, the relationship you can't make up your mind about.
Why helpful people show up in the woods. The Chinese imagination puts its best encounters in forests. The Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove drank and talked freely away from court. Tao Yuanming picked chrysanthemums under the eastern fence and looked at the southern mountain. The "helpful person" in a forest dream is probably not an official — more likely someone ordinary who points you the right way when you need it.
The "straight dream" label. Being a "straight dream" means it's not a warning or a message from the gods. It's the day's mood playing back in a different scene. You feel good, the forest is bright. You feel tangled, the forest is dark. Sometimes the reading is just that simple.
